Senpai Tim Petros was first introduced to Shotokan Karate in 2001 as an assistant photographer while taking photos at our annual Karate tournament.  Until that time, he had no interest in learning Karate.  He was soon turning 50, and looking for a way to stay in shape so he signed up for a trial class.

“After a couple of months, I was hooked.  Not only did I receive the physical training I was looking for, but the mental and character development as well.  I think that it is very healthy to learn something new as you get older.  Many of the people I have learned from have been younger than me.  This humbling experience has strengthened my character and kept me younger.  I didn’t set out to become a black belt.  My goal was just to learn as much as I could, stay on the path, and not give up.  Step at a time, I was eventually rewarded for my perseverance the coveted black belt.”  Tim continues to study the way of Shotokan Karate, and enjoys coaching new students the path as well.

Tim graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and has been a professional commercial photographer for most of his career.  He now specializes in “Interactive Photography” such as virtual tours (www.timpetros.com) and has also successfully patented and marketed the simple tie-wrap called Bongo Ties (www.bongoties.com).  Senpai Tim has contributed his graphic skills to the design of several of our school T-shirts over the years.  He is married and a father of two beautiful children.
